Our firm
Experienced tax lawyers. Personal attention. Fees agreed before the work starts.
Your first 30 minutes are free.

When a tax problem threatens your business or your family’s finances, you need someone who understands both the law and the pressure you’re under. Tax Lawyers has provided expert tax advice and legal representation for approximately 20 years. Based in Como, Perth, we act for individuals, company directors and businesses across Australia.
Experience that makes a difference
Our firm has a long history of achieving favourable results for clients in serious tax matters. We know the work behind those results: understanding the law, finding the evidence, challenging an unsound position and preparing thoroughly for negotiations or court. We cannot promise a particular outcome. We can give you an honest assessment and determined representation.
Our work includes ATO audits and objections, tax debt, Director Penalty Notices, criminal tax prosecutions, court proceedings and appeals. We also advise on transactions, duties, superannuation and trusts, helping clients make decisions before a tax problem takes hold.
Your lawyer. Your questions. Your costs.
You deal directly with an experienced tax lawyer. We explain what the ATO is seeking, what it could mean for you and what we recommend doing about it. We handle the legal work, keep you informed and work with your accountant or other advisers where their input is needed. You should never be left wondering who is looking after your matter.
Before work starts, your costs agreement sets out the agreed scope and our estimate of fees. It is an estimate, not a fixed quote or a cap. If a separate issue or a new stage needs additional work, we discuss it with you and agree the cost first. You decide whether to proceed knowing what you are likely to pay.
Your first 30-minute consultation is free. Tell us what has happened, what is worrying you and whether you have received a deadline. We will listen and explain how we can help.
Sean Hayes
Principal lawyer, Tax Lawyers
Sean Hayes is the principal of Tax Lawyers. He has practised in Australian tax law for more than twenty years, and holds degrees in law, in tax, and in applied tax law.
That work has run the full length of a tax problem. He advises on transactions and structures before anything goes wrong, represents clients through ATO audits, reviews and objections, and appears in tax litigation and appeals when a dispute has to be decided by a tribunal or a court.
He has acted as legal counsel for ASX listed companies and for foreign governments, and speaks regularly at major continuing professional development seminars for other lawyers and accountants. Doyle's Guide has recognised him as a leading tax lawyer in each of the past seven years.
Clients come to the firm at the point where a letter, a notice or a set of court papers has arrived and the next step is not obvious. Sean takes those matters himself, and the first consultation is free.
